How to Keep Your Home Safe by Protecting Your Windows

Fall is that special time of year when we no longer need the air conditioning running full blast, and it’s not quite cold enough to turn on the heat. It’s one of those precious times of the year when we’re finally free to open a few windows and enjoy a relaxing breeze. You might not give it a second thought but opening a window comes with a certain amount of liability. If you’re not careful, an intruder could take the opportunity to slip inside your house. Don’t neglect your windows. Use these tips to secure your home’s windows and keep your loved ones and personal possessions out of harm’s way.

Set Alarms and Reminders

It goes without saying that leaving your windows open when you’re away from your house puts you at risk. But we’re only human. We might not always remember to lock up every window before we leave the house, especially if you own a large home with dozens of different windows and openings.

If you leave at roughly the same time every day for work, you can set an alarm or a reminder on your phone so that you always remember to close up before you leave. You can also put up a sign on the inside of your front door reminding you to do the same thing.

If you have the resources, you can also invest in automatic window openers, so that you can remotely control your home’s windows from just about anywhere. Or you can invest in a series of motion-detection security cameras so that you’ll be notified instantly if anyone tries to break in while you’re out of town.

Add Reinforcements

Sometimes locking your windows isn’t enough. If you live in an area where crime is a problem, you might want to think about adding some reinforcements to your windows such as an alarm system that goes off if anyone breaks through the glass. You can also purchase impact-resistant glass to prevent intruders from breaking through in the first place.

Send a Message to Your Neighbors

If someone does try to break into your house, your neighbors might end up being your best line of defense. You can help your neighbors keep an eye on your home when you’re not around by setting up motion-sensor lights around some of the most vulnerable parts of your property. You should also clear away large bushes and trees that make it easy for buglers to hide as they struggle to get inside your home. Large trees can also give buglers a leg up as they try to reach the second floor.

We tend to overlook our windows when discussing home security. Be a responsible homeowner and come up with a system that works for you. Even with certain precautions in place, things can still go wrong. With home insurance, you can rest assured that you’ll be covered if anyone damages your property or steals from you.
