How to Be Covered as a Rideshare Driver

In recent years, one of the most popular jobs people can have is driving for Uber or Lyft. While it is a great way to earn money, there are certain things you should know before pursuing a ridesharing career. One of the most important is rideshare insurance.

In reality, there is not one type of insurance that is called “rideshare insurance”, but there are special considerations and actions you need to take with your insurance provider to cover your vehicle properly while you rideshare. Personal insurance will not cover your vehicle or yourself in an event of a crash when it comes to ridesharing because it counts as using your vehicle for “commercial purposes”. This is where it may throw people off because for you to be able to drive for companies like Lyft and Uber, you must have personal auto insurance.

In addition to personal insurance (both comprehensive and liability insurance), you must have a certain endorsement: a rideshare endorsement. Knowing what you need to have when driving for these rideshare companies is only half the battle, however. There are other necessary steps to take to make sure you are fully covered in the event of a crash while you are ridesharing.

Part 1: Signing -In to the Rideshare App

When you log into the app and you are available to accept trip requests – but haven’t yet received a request for a trip, you’ll be covered by the minimum coverage available with the rideshare endorsement. It is important to note that usually, there is a maximum of $100,000 that covers total bodily injury per accident. This means $50,000 covers one person’s injury, and another $50,000 covers the other.

Part 2: Accepting

This coverage is in effect the moment you accept a trip request from someone until you signal the app to let it know the trip has finished. When you are transporting a passenger, your coverage amount is increased considerably because you now have another person in your vehicle. For liability coverage, the amount can be around one million dollars and approximately $250,000 for injuries.

It is important to take the necessary steps to ensure that you are completely covered by insurance in the event of a car accident while ridesharing. After taking the necessary actions and contacting your insurance provider to make sure you’ve “covered all your bases”, you will not have to worry about being unable to pay bills due to insurance not covering something.
